The 4 Elements of Fitness

Most people want to be fit but that raises a question. What does it mean to be fit? The answer is fairly simple. To be fit, one must have physical capability in four areas: aerobic capacity, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility and body composition.

1. Aerobic Capacity. Aerobic capacity, which is also known as cardiorespiratory fitness, refers to the health and function of the heart, lungs and circulatory system. Simply stated, aerobic fitness is the ability of the cardiorespiratory system to deliver an adequate supply of oxygen to exercising muscles. As your aerobic capacity increases, your ability to participate in more intense and longer lasting exercise also increases (e.g., walking, running, swimming and bicycling). It can be argued that aerobic capacity is the most important of the four elements of fitness because of the health benefits it bestows. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, increased aerobic capacity leads to reduced blood pressure, decreased total cholesterol, increased HDL (good) cholesterol, decreased body fat, increased heart function and decreased risk of Type 2 diabetes.

2. Muscular Strength and Endurance. Muscular strength is the maximum amount of force a muscle or muscle group can generate during a single contraction. Muscular endurance is the number of repeated contractions a muscle or muscle group can perform without tiring. Both are important components of overall fitness because increasing your strength through various types of resistance training (e.g., weightlifting) leads to increased bone strength, decreased bone loss, decreased muscle loss, increased tendon and ligament strength, increased physical capacity, improved metabolic function (e.g., burn more calories at rest), and decreased risk of injury.

3. Flexibility. Flexibility is the range of motion within a joint. Increased flexibility provides a variety of benefits such as decreased risk of injury, increased flow of blood and nutrients to joint structures, increased neuromuscular coordination, decreased risk of low back pain, improved posture and reduced muscular tension.

4. Body Composition. Body composition refers to the relative percentage of body weight that consists of body fat and fat-free mass (everything other than fat such as muscles, organs, blood, bones and water). Generally speaking, the lower your body fat percentage the better because of the diseases linked to excess body fat such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, arthritis and sleep disorders. I am often asked, “Can you be fat and fit?” The answer is an overwhelming NO. A significant element of fitness is the possession of a healthy body fat percentage because increased fat leads to decreased athletic performance and increased risk of disease (although it is possible to be overweight and healthy since health is merely the absence of disease or illness). According to the American Council on Exercise, the average body-fat percentage for men is 18-24%. For fit men the percentage is 14-17%. The average percentage for women is 25-31%; however fit women will be in the range of 21-24%. Body-fat percentages above 25% for men and 32% for women are considered obese.

Winter sports Vs summer sports, who will win? As you may already know seasons require different types of sports for the younger and older generation. It definitely depends in which state, area and country you live as well. The season and temperature require different types of sports. Let’s have a look at some sports you can perform in each season.

Winter sports:

Some classical winter sports are definitely, indoor swimming, gymnastic, basketball, ice hockey and indoor tennis. These sports can be performed at any given season, regardless of whether it is cold or not. People like indoor activities during the colder season because it simply helps them to stay fit and in shape during the entire year. Some people tend to only do sports in summer which leads to a non balanced lifestyle and health. If you want to become successful in the areas of health, profession, and sports you definitely need to do winter sports as well.

Summer sports:

People mean there are more summer sports than winter sports, so what is true? Well in summer you have the possibility to face many outdoor activities such as soccer, basketball, street hockey, beach activities, water sports, tennis jogging, hiking, climbing etc. There are probably as many possibilities in summer as there are in winter. The only difference is that we human beings tend to be lazy when it is cold outside. Summer sports help us to stay in shape and enjoy the sunny days during the hotter and warmer season. There are different kinds of activities you can perform that are single player and multiplayer. Playing soccer, basketball, and street hockey requires at least 2 players, better more. The fun and enjoyment factor is multiple times higher if you play with your friends, family and other people you do know. Doing sports alone is mostly boring and not appropriate. However, sports such as jogging and swimming can be performed by one person and don’t require a second person.

How do you know which winter and summer sports are going to be optimal for you? You simply have to try different activities to find the one that will match your flavor and tendency best. However, if you spend time with people you love, and aim to get in shape you probably won’t mind doing multiple sports at a season. Every sport has a different focus and trains different muscles. Just going to the gym might be too one-sided, so you should be motivated to do at least 3 sports at a time.

Review of Bright Starts Spots and Stripes Safari Gym

We bought this play gym for Toby after trying out a dreadful Lamaze one. We were looking for something that would entertain him and help with developing his co-ordination and attention skills.

The gym was very easy to put up and ready to use within minutes. To look at, the gym is very attractive. It has black and white spots which are great to catch a very young babies attention when they can only really see high contrasts. Some of the attachments are also black and white which again, is great for a young baby. As well as the high contrast black and white, there is a variety of colours on the arches of the gym and the actual play mat. Toby loves looking at the colours now he is a bit older.

The gym comes with several attachments. The best by far is the musical tiger which attaches to the top of the gym. The tiger has 20 minutes of music and flashing lights. Toby can sit and stare at these for hours! He waves his little arms and legs around when it is turned on and the closest he has came to laughing has been while he was laid watching the lights. He shouts at us if the sound and lights go off so he must love it, in fact, it gets more smiles that his Daddy or I do! The musical tiger has 3 settings and 2 different volumes, one setting plays a few musical tunes (warning – you will hum these tunes to yourself, sing along to them and even dream of them), and the other setting plays nature sounds – birds, crickets etc. Toby’s favourite is the music as the lights flash more. The third setting is a touch sensitive version of the tunes, it turns off after 30 seconds or so of not being touched, not useful now but I imagine will be great once Toby is big enough to figure that out. The tiger is also great because it is detachable, which means it can come with us on his pushchair, his bouncer and in the car. I would say the tiger alone is probably worth the money we spent on the gym. My only criticism of the gym comes in here – it would be great to be able to put the tiger on silent and still have the lights on. After a while, listening to the same songs over and over again can become a bit annoying.

The gym comes with quite a few attachments, as I said before, some are black and white and some are colourful. One of the great things about the gym is that you can set up where you want these attachments and move them around as much as possible, this keeps Toby on his figurative toes. It also comes with extra hoops so that you can attach your own toys, there are lots of different places where you can hang or attach the objexts. Toby’s second favourite toy is what we refer to as ‘Jingly Tiger’. As the name might suggest, Jingly Tiger jingles when it is hit. Toby loves the sound it makes and his coordination has come such a long way from having Jingly Tiger hanging above him on the mat. The gym also has a Zebra rattle which at the moment is hung above Toby but I suspect it will make a great independent toy when he is bigger. The other attachments include a butterfly and leaf teethers which at the moment are purely for decoration, although make a fun sound when they hit against the other dangling toys. Toby is a bit young for teethers but the leaf ones in particular feel lovely, so I imagine will be quite a hit once he’s old enough.

The gym also comes with a detachable mirror which can be fastened to the side of the gym, again I think this will be more useful for when Toby is a bit older. The final thing the gym comes with is a giraffe pillow. This is meant to be for when your baby is trying to do mini push-ups. The idea is that the giraffe can be placed under your baby’s arms as support. I’ve tried this a few times with Toby and he isn’t too impressed, i think its a bit soon. That being said, the only place he will remotely entertain the idea of tummy time is on the play gym mat.

The gym also folds in half with the arches still attached so that it is very easy to transport or hide away. The arches also are detachable for when baby is a bit bigger and just needs a comfortable mat to sit on.

Overall, the mat is one of the best buys …

The History of Water Sports

Swimming is noted in many of the classics as relating to heroism and religion. Nicolas Wynman’s Dialogue Concerning the Art of Swimming (1538) is the first recorded written document on swimming methods. Swimming first appeared in the Olympics in 1896, paralleled to the development of the swimming pool. Swimming the English Channel is the most publicized non-Olympic event. It proves excellence in strength and endurance. Matthew Webb from England was the first man to cross the English Channel in 1875, and later Gertrude Ederle of the Unites States of America became the first woman to cross in 1926.

Snorkeling to view exotic fish and aquamarine life is a much-loved vacation adventure. In ancient times snorkels were crafted from hollow reeds found in lakes and marshes. Pliny the Elder, a first century A.D. Roman makes reference to the snorkel, so the activity holds rank as one of the oldest recorded water sports. Loenardo da Vinci created a more modern snorkel when the Venetian senate summonsed him to do so. Divers attached this hollow tube to leather helmets

The present-day diver’s snorkel is typically a J-shaped tube that is open at the top and has a mouthpiece at the other end, usually no more than 2 ft (61 cm) long.

American West-coasters go wild riding the waves on a wooden plank known as a surfboard. Originally, surfing developed in Hawaii in the nineteenth century. It became popular in California in the 1920s, and became a hit youth sport in the 1960s.

Surfers originally used long, cumbersome wooden boards but now ride lightweight synthetic boards that allow a greater degree of maneuverability. Hawaii holds annual international surfing championships.

Water polo originated in England in 1870, and American joined the bandwagon in the early 1900s. Many club and college teams exist for this rigorous sport. Americans gave the game a twist by using a softer rubber ball in a larger pool, a game known as softball water polo. Violence and rough play ended this faction of the sport, and today only the hardball version continues to be played worldwide. Men began Olympic level water polo in 1900, and women first played in the Olympics in 2000.

Diving, another favorite Olympic sport, initiated competition in 1871 off the London Bridge. Diving is now a popular sport at the high school and collegiate level, and is an amazing display of strength, control and agility.

The Importance of Physical Fitness

In its most general meaning, physical fitness is a general state of good physical health. 3. Flexibility: This denotes the ability to move joints and use muscles through their full range of motion.

4. Body composition: Considered as one of the components of fitness, composition refers to the body in terms of lean mass (muscle, bone, vital tissue, and organs) and fat mass. Actually, the optimal ratio of fat to lean mass is an indication of fitness. Performing the right set of exercises can help people get rid off body fat and increase or maintain muscle mass.

The Sports and Hobbies of Mozambique

Mozambicans are quite passionate about their sports; with a firm focus on soccer and to a lesser extent other sports. There are lots of opportunities for hobbies and recreational activities, but as these can be quite costly at times you will find most Mozambican’s aren’t able to partake. As with most other facets of this beautiful country, the lack infrastructure combined with the poverty levels have had a profound effect on the development of sports and hobbies through the entire land.


As a result of this, many of the most popular sports are those that don’t require much money to play.

Soccer

Soccer, sometimes known as football due to the Portuguese influence, is hugely popular in Mozambique as in other African nations. You will often come across both children and adults having an informal game whenever possible, especially on weekends. The structure for proper club soccer is not as good as in other countries due to infrastructure challenges, but there are still some professional clubs about. There is a lot of exchange between Portugal and Mozambique in soccer terms, with players and teams from each country regularly playing with and against each other.

Athletics

Athletics is a sport that is not a widely practiced as it should be, given the relative ease of getting involved. Mozambican does at times punch above its weight in this field of sport, having won a gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics proving that they can compete at the highest level.

Basketball

Unlike most other southern African nations, Basketball is a very popular sport in Mozambique. While being internationally recognized since 1978, the Mozambican national team has yet to win any notable championships. This of course hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm for the sport and it is still quite widespread.

Capoeira

The martial art sport of Capoeira is starting to take off in Mozambique, with the popularity growing at a rapid pace.

Stadiums

Stadiums and sporting facilities in Mozambique are in short supply, with some world class facilities recently being constructed with foreign investment. The outlying areas tend to have little to no facilities, while the soccer clubs seem to attract all the investment. The newest and best stadium is the Estadio do Zimpeto which was opened in 2011 and is able to seat up to 42,000 people. While being touted as a multi-use stadium, it is almost exclusively used for soccer matches.

Hobbies

The types of hobbies available in Mozambique are generally all of the physical, outdoor variety. The more popular hobbies include:

  • Fishing: With a substantial coast line, Mozambique is well known for fishing. This takes the form of both subsistence and recreational fishing. The country is well known for game fishing and is largely unspoiled, making it a firm favorite with both local and international visitors.
  • Watersports: Any sort of sport involving the water, whether it is sailing, diving or even just swimming, is quite popular due to the warm weather and water.
  • Sand boarding: Being quite an easy sport to learn and not always needing lots of equipment, sand boarding is a relatively new hobby that is starting to become quite popular.

Know This When Bringing a Personal Trainer Into Your Apartment Building Gym

As more and more New York City apartment buildings look to attract new buyers and renters, there is an ever grow list of amenities being offered. In these cases, should a resident wish to bring in a personal trainer, it is best to check with the building management or a board member on procedures. They want to make sure that the resident, trainer, and the building’s assets are legally protected in case of any accidental injury. Life Fitness X3-5 Elliptical Trainer Review

We reviewed and used the Life Fitness X3-5 elliptical trainer over a period of 3 weeks. We also interviewed Life Fitness X3-5 owners as well as several people who had used the elliptical trainer in the gym or fitness center. The X3-5 is a step up from the old X3-0 model and has many top of the line features. However for an MSRP of about $2900.00 it is beyond the budget of the average home fitness equipment buyer. We found that the Life Fitness elliptical trainers top feature was the very smooth ride comes from its rear flywheel that incorporates the Life Fitness “Link6” drive system.

The Life Fitness X3-5 elliptical trainers 19-inch stride fits most people. Our largest tester is a power lifter at 6’2″ and 285 lbs and he felt the trainer was relatively stable. Pedal placement is good and allows comfortable foot placement. X3-5 owners and users were pleasantly impressed with how quiet this elliptical trainer is even during an intensive workout it remained one of the quietist ellipticals that we have tested. One owner did complain that this model was hard to move.

There are many quality features on the Life Fitness X3-5 that we like including the wireless heart rate controlled workout system that allows you to target specific workout intensity. Basically your hearts response to the workout, controls the resistance levels you experience during the workout. Basically it is a plug and play workout program tailored to your specific body.

The Life Fitness X3-5 elliptical trainers console contains the My Personal Trainer software that allows you focus on lower body workouts or total body workouts. We heard several comments on these features with the most common being that it worked well once you spent the time to figure out the system. Most people were using one of the 12 standard workout programs to achieve the workout intensity they desired. We rated the upper body workout and the handlebars as just average on this elliptical.

Most of the Life Fitness X3-5 owners we interviewed purchased their elliptical trainers on-line. The units were delivered and set up by the owners with few problems. Damaged or non functioning consoles seem to be the biggest complaint we heard. Customer service was rated as fair in resolving setup and warranty issues. The Life Fitness warranty for cross traines includes a lifetime on the frame, 2-years on the electrical and mechanical parts, 1-year on labor. An extended warranty is recommended for all elliptical trainers.

We recommend the Life Fitness X3-5 elliptical trainer for home and light commercial use, however it is probably too expensive for most in home applications. It has many features that will satisfy the most dedicated cardio fitness buf. Due to the relatively high cost for an in home elliptical trainer, we recommend that you spend the time to physically test ride any fitness equipment at least once before you make your purchase. Find a dealer, fitness center or local Y that has the Life Fitness X3-5 set up and complete an intense workout. we also suggest that you question X3-5 users at these fitness centers as well. Only then will you know for sure that the Life Fitness X3-5 will meet your fitness needs.

During the school days till college everyone is involved in one or other sport, but when people find a job they forget about health and they soon become busy in their work. One should consult their doctor every 3-4 months for a regular checkup’s. They should not be stressed – if they find stress they should take yoga classes every day, so that their blood pressure will be normal. Otherwise that would lead them to hyper blood pressure or hypo, which may lead to heart disease. Most of the corporate companies in USA as well as rest of the world are employing dietitians, physiotherapists, and also good doctors to take care of their employees.

The next thing I want to discuss is the diet because the intake food which we are taking is responsible for all the fats, carbohydrates,proteins and necessary enzymes which will be useful for the energy conversion or utilization in the human body. We should follow the diet very strictly by avoiding the junk food available in the market. A recent survey states that most of the people fall ill by consumption of junk food. A food with little fat is advisable because by taking more fat content the fat will be accumulated in the veins and arteries in the human body which result in high blood pressure which may lead to heart disease. In order to reduce the fats in the human body we should take less oil or cheese or butter in our food there by controlling the fats in the human body. Regular exercise will be helpful to control the fat in the human body.

By playing sports it will be a good exercise in the human body. Swimming is also a good sport. We should maintain our body weight according to our height. There we can reduce our health problems to most of the extent. Quick But Healthy Breakfast Recipes

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Missing out on breakfast will not only cause stress levels to rise, but will make the stomach acids burn through the stomach and esophageal lining and cause, horror of horrors, bad breath.

Breakfast is called just that because it literally means to break the fast that was forced on the body for it to sleep for at least six to eight hours every night. This means that most, if not all, the food eaten during dinner or supper would have been fully digested and there is nothing left for the body to depend on. This will lower the blood sugar levels and will make the brain feel groggy or at least, light headed.

Here are some breakfast ideas that are quick and healthy and will put you at the top of the world in no time at all.

Not up to cereals? That is not a problem as you can still get your dairy and milk proteins through this simple but delicious recipe. The night before, cut up some boiled chicken into cubes and set aside. Chop some onions and garlic as well. That’s it. The next morning mix the three ingredients and sauté in light butter until the onions and garlic are done. Add a pinch of salt if you want, but grating cheese over the mixture will make it salty enough. Then, add a tablespoon of flour into the mixture and mix well. Add a dash of pepper and some Worcestershire sauce, mix again. Last, pour in a can or pack of all purpose cream or light cream if desired. When the mixture thickens, set aside to cool. Grab some bread and toast them lightly. When done, simply spoon the mixture on the bread. This is a hearty and healthy breakfast that is sure to tide you over till lunch, but if you eat too much, then it will last till way after lunch.

How about some eggs? Simply beat three or four eggs with some salt and pepper and grate cheese over it, the amount is up to you. Then get some of that ham left over from the other day, some green pepper, a tomato, onions and garlic. Cut up into pieces and set aside. In a small pan, heat some vegetable oil or butter, whichever takes your fancy, and when hot enough where the sides start to simmer, pour the egg mixture. Leave to cook for about a minute and then carefully arrange the remaining ingredients in the middle of the cooking eggs. When the sides of the eggs could be readily lifted, carefully flip one side over the ham mixture and then fold over the other side to make an omelette. Muy bien! Spanish omelette in less than 8 minutes!

There are so many ideas for breakfast that are hardly being made use of in homes nowadays because of the usually excuse of having no time. Actually, there is a lot of time left for you to do something because all it takes is a little bit of planning and reading that old recipe book your mom and grandmother owned.
